Just Curious

We have just returned from vacationing up in Holland, MI and I'm so very tired! While getting a family of 6 packed up, and driving 9 hours sounds like mind numbing fun, me thinks I need a vacation to recover from my vacation. Wow, am I that spoiled?!!! .... yes, I guess I am.

We have been going for the past few years with Scott's family and have a lovely time relaxing on Lake Michigan's beautiful beaches and eating the scrumptious berries that grow abundantly throughout the great lakes states. However, now that my kids are older, they are starting to have different ideas about where they'd like to go and do!

On a side note, I don't remember having funny ideas til I got a job, but whatever.

Anyway, a few holidays thrown out there were, vacationing in Florida and going to Disney, spending a week in New England, going to West Point and taking the train into Manhattan, camping, doing a whirlwind museum/sightseeing tour of Chicago, and of course Oliver's favorite... going into the wilderness armed with nothing but air soft guns and the clothes on our backs. etc

Some of these are more appealing/realistic than others, but it's interesting to hear what my kids have to say. I'm also seriously looking for new ideas.

So here's my question to you:

What is your most memorable vacation from growing up and why?

#1: where are the photos?? don't leave us hanging!!!

my fav family vacays were always disneyland, but that's because we always did it with my dad's side of the family as a big reunion--running around the magic kingdom with my 5 cousins was good times.

So Gald to hear from you gril! I would have guess tiny dancer not brass monkey...anyway.
I think that the more family involved the more memories are made. As a child we went to the beach every summer with extended family, and every so often go to Disney World for the big bang. I think it is the hype of flying and leaving the state that marks that memory. I say stick with family and the beach who cares about the kids, they need that down time anyway. They will keep the good memories and forget that they didn't like it, eventually.

I HAVE MISSED YOU!!
Memorable vacation...
Camping. I grew up in WA and in the summer we would take a ferry out to one of the San Juan Islands (Friday Harbor was my fave) and camp. We would also camp in the mountains during the fall and pick berries the freeze and use over the next year. Something about camping that makes lots of fun memories. I'm guessing it's the lack of modern conveniences that makes everyone gather together and have fun.
But if all else fails, the "air soft guns and just the clothes on your back" sounds like something you would never forget even if you wanted to :)

Every summer we went to the Texas State Association of Postmaster's convention as our big family vacay. There were some places that were more memorable than others (Brenham were they make Blue Bell was a big favorite). But I would say the time we went to a petting zoo and a monkey flung his poop on me was the one I remember and hated most, for obvious reasons...

When I was growing up we'd travel from TX to NY every single summer. My most memorable is what happened every summer:

My dad always had to renovate something at our "summer cottage" and I can always remember hearing the 'f' bomb.

It was just a camping trip...don't know where or why.

It really is like they said at GC in that one talk..they had been on such a great long road trip and done all these fun things and the kid told his dad that his fav part was sitting under the stars talking to his dad.

P.S. You really have been gone for a while...were you just vacationing that long or has your summer been as crazy as mine?

We went camping..A LOT! We also drove to Michigan from Utah. That was fun. But one thing that I remember the most is going to Disneyland and having all of us dressed in neon pink shirts and home sewn, matching shorts. It was in the late 80's!

You should take your family to Dollywood. And I hear there's a lot to do in Winchester, Ky. You could go there.

Lake Powell! My family had a boat growing up and Powell was really the only place we took it. I have tons of memories and laughs from those times. I miss it terribly!

Hey Renee! Glad to hear you got an exhausting vacation! My favorite vacation was going to Winter Quarters in Nebraska, it is such a cool place, and then we went to Mt. Rushmore and of course the Sturgis Bike Rally--nothing to excite the boys like a bikini car wash (NOT!) Actually, my favorite vacation was going to Zions National Park with my mom and dad, they both worked there and they knew all the coolest places to go and everything about the park.

Last summer we spent a week on a houseboat in Lake Powell, and that was serious fun boating and wakeboarding and just playing. Last January we went to Hawaii, and that is the best place I've ever been to in my life! It's so beautiful and fun just to hang on the beach, snorkel, and explore. Not such a fun flight there with kids though! Took 12 hours!

Oh one more, Cancun! We are dying to go back. It's a very short flight from here and super cool. The ruins there are incredible!

O.K. I found you on the Word to you Mother blog. You are to funny. I thought I would chime in. My honest best vacations when I was young was camping. But each time I get ready to pack up my family of 7, I can see why my mom only had 3 kids. I must keep reminding myself that those are the best memories I have. I want to give them to my kids as well. I will say, I totally understand the vacation after the vacation. Several days in bed for me, with someone else doing everything would be awesome. I wonder if thier is some sort of service...

"My professional life has been centered on the home, the well being of the family and everything that these subjects encompass. When I began working in this area more than 25 years ago, the subject of homemaking as it relates to families was largely overlooked, though the interest was clearly broad and the desire for information strong. My colleagues and I soon discovered we were satisfying a deeply felt unmet need."
