One of the best things about blogging is being able to pick the brains of my very creative friends en masse!
We are trying to pick out a new camera for everyday use because our normal camera and video camera are both breaking. Unfortunately, I have no idea what I'm looking for and had no idea how many different kinds of cameras there are. There are TONS by the way! I only know a pretty picture and that's what we want.
So I started emailing people individually and then realized how dumb that was when I could just ask right here. WHAT DO YOU THINK? I want a camera that can take good pictures and records videos all in one. Is there an advantage to the slr's if you're not going to change out the lenses?
Canon Rebel vs. Nikon vs. Sony point and shoot vs. whatever??????
I know, this is a really hard problem to have, right? Please help me.

I don't know anything, but I love my canon s3is. I have no idea about slr's. I will ask some friends for you and let you know what I find out.
Hand down, favorite....Nikon SLR. I have a Nikon D5000. Who knew I could take such great pics, that it was my camera holding me back? Love the features, and settings. I find it easy to use and experiment with. I know a guy who has one with the extra zoom lens when you decide to take the plunge!
And I forgot to add Shelly, that the kit lens will work "fine" in every setting. However you're not going to get awesome shots of, say, soccer or indoor pictures. But if you want it for just chill family photos, portrait type stuff, it'll be just fine. But definitely stay away from the point and shoot and keep that window of "better lenses" opened. Being able to upgrade your lenses is awesome. After I had my kit lens for about 2 years, I bought my telephoto lens. I've had that for about 3 years now and now I want to get a nice wide angle. It's just nice to have that choice down the road.
And a great portrait lens will only run you about $100.
