In the three weeks of summer, we've already had about a gazillion birthday parties and play dates. While I never made any New Year's resolutions, I have committed to be better about getting the kids together with their friends over the break. I have finally come to realize that they don't always want to play with each other.

Suzanne's Lamp Redo

I've always wondered how people customize lamp shades with coordinating fabrics. Well, the extraordinary Suzanne has recently posted a very simple tutorial on her blog, "Just Another Hangup"! She's so creative in her use of inexpensive and used items to create fun new things to decorate with.

Quilting Is Fun, Really
This lap quilt was for the adorable baby Reese. I wanted to get away from the Amy Butler type fabrics I'd been using a lot of and go with more small scale, country bright patterns, ie birds, flowers, etc

A Morning Out

A couple of weeks ago I was super excited to get a morning out with my good friend Sarah M. We went into the city to take a class given by Natalie Chanin of Alabama Chanin. She's a designer, author, sewer and entrepreneur extraordinaire, who specializes in developing innovative hand applique techniques, typically using organic cotton jers

FLOR
This is not the first time I've mentioned my love for the FLOR company, but Martha has come out with a few new patterns in her line and they're beautiful!I love my FLOR tiles and would highly recommend this system to anyone with pets or small children especially. If there's a spill or "accident", you simply pull the square up and rinse it off in the kitchen sink. It dries quickly and looks brand new!

If I Were a Rich Man

This is my dream bag. I saw it on Martha's craft department's site the other day and have been dreaming about it since!
I'm not a spend happy person. Most of my things, home decor, clothing, even toiletries come from discount stores or flea markets, but every once in a while something decadent catches my fancy!
The "Fleabag" is utilitarian and universal, organic and sustainable, and produced in New York City. It comes in a variety of beautiful colors, but this one is my favorite. I could wear it with black, or white, khaki, orange, grey, blue jeans, a purple dress or whatever.
If you want to know the reason this dream will never be my reality, click here:

Why God Made Moms
Why did God make mothers?1. She's the only one who knows where the scotch tape is.2. Mostly to clean the house.3. To help us out of there when we were getting born.
How did God make mothers?1. He used dirt, just like for the rest of us.2. Magic plus super powers and a lot of stirring.3. God made my mom just the same like he made me. He just used bigger parts.
What ingredients are mothers made of?1. God makes mothers out of clouds and angel hair and everything nice in the world and one dab of mean.2. They had to get their start from men's bones. Then they mostly use string, I think.
Why did God give you your mother and not some other mom?1. We're related.2. God knew she likes me a lot more than other people's mom like me.
What kind of a little girl was your mom?1. My mom has always been my mom and none of that other stuff.2. I don't know because I wasn't there, but my guess would be pretty bossy.3. They say she used to be nice.
What did mom need to know about dad before she married him?1. His last name.2. She had to know his background. Like is he a crook? Does he get drunk on beer?3. Does he make at least $800 a year? Did he say NO to drugs and YES to chores?
Why did your mom marry your dad?1. My dad makes the best spaghetti in the world. And my mom eats a lot2. She got too old to do anything else with him.3. My grandma says that mom didn't have her thinking cap on.
Who's the boss at your house?1. Mom doesn't want to be boss, but she has to because dad's such a goof ball.2. Mom. You can tell by room inspection. She sees the stuff under the bed.3. I guess mom is, but only because she has a lot more to do than dad.
What's the difference between moms and dads?1. Moms work at work and work at home and dads just go to work at work.2. Moms know how to talk to teachers without scaring them.3. Dads are taller and stronger, but moms have all the real power 'cause that's who you got to ask if you want to sleep over at your friends.4. Moms have magic, they make you feel better without medicine..
What does your mom do in her spare time?1. Mothers don't do spare time.2. To hear her tell it, she pays bills all day long.
What would it take to make your mom perfect?1. On the inside she's already perfect. Outside, I think some kind of plastic surgery.2. Diet. You know, her hair. I'd diet, maybe blue.
If you could change one thing about your mom, what would it be?1. She has this weird thing about me keeping my room clean. I'd get rid of that.2. I'd make my mom smarter. Then she would know it was my sister who did it not me.3. I would like for her to get rid of those invisible eyes on the back of her head.

10 Things I Can't Live Without
I got this idea from Martha's bff, Kevin Sharkey's blog.1. I am a magazine junky! I love my "Martha", but I also can't live without my "House Beautiful" and was very very sad when "Cottage Living" was discontinued.

2. My Pfaff is always out and ready to assist. It's my best friend.

3. Hoop Earrings are my favorite accessory. I wear them with everything. Simple, but slimming.

4. Dental Floss.

5. I can't go a week without eating some kind of Korean food. It's so delicious and healthy!!!

The older I get, the harder it is to see, so my humongous lap top is wonderful. Heavy, but wonderful.7. This is one of the best kept beauty secrets around. The Remington Emi is a blow dryer with an attachment that waves your hair. I love mine and now that I have a fabulous new haircut with lots of layers, I can have wavy hair in less than 10 minutes after I get out of the shower. Seriously good!
8. Baby oil is what I use to keep my skin soft after a shower and what I use to take my mascara off. It works so well and is super cheap!
9. I don't wear lip stick more than maybe twice a year, but lip balm is in my purse, pocket, desk drawer, car dash every hour of every day. My sister gave me a tube of this Lypsyl brand and it's my new favorite! Classic Cherry Chapstick is a close second, and Blistex, third.... it's so tingly.

This week....
d a wonderful visit with Scott's parents and sister. They were here for just a couple of days, but it was so nice visiting and getting to know them better. They came to church with us and the gals came to Young Women's with me. His mom and dad also had a few days to tour some fun sites in Nashville and were impressed I think. They also brought me a bag of biscuit mix from the famous "Loveless Cafe". I made them, and they are the best biscuits ever. No wonder they're famous.
BTW), so they made all the runners stop. HE WAS SO IRRITATED!!! Scott was on track to finish his 26 miles in about 4 hours and 20 minutes, which is awesome for his first time... so, he is now searching for the next closest marathon so he can achieve his goal. What a bummer, eh?Tuesday, April 20, 2010

Gardens and Gardening
I love gardening and I love gardens. Someday, when life slows down a bit, I'd love to join a club and learn all I can about growing everything from flowers to vegetables to herbs and fruit trees... I'd also love to have a small green house to start seeds in and keep more plants alive through the winter. These are beautiful landscape and garden pictures I've found on various blogs and websites that I love. I'm not the best gardener, but someday.

Luckily my wisteria and clematis came back this spring so I'm also considering planting a climbing hydrangea. Any thoughts???

Martha's super organized and beautiful vegetable garden takes my breath away!!!

I love the wide square mulch beds under these trees. Shade gardens are among my favorites and last year I was able to find a little corner in the back of my house for one. Luckily, most of the plants lived through the past winter, but I'm thinking of adding some hellebores. Has anyone grown them before?

Happy Easter!
"My brothers and sisters, we laugh, we cry, we work, we play, we love, we live. And then we die. Death is our universal heritage. All must pass its portals. Death claims the aged, the weary and worn. It visits the youth in the bloom of hope and the glory of expectation. Nor are little children kept beyond its grasp. In the words of the Apostle Paul, “It is appointed unto men once to die.”And dead we would remain but for one Man and His mission, even Jesus of Nazareth. Born in a stable, cradled in a manger, His birth fulfilled the inspired pronouncements of many prophets. He was taught from on high. He provided the life, the light, and the way. Multitudes followed Him. Children adored Him. The haughty rejected Him. He spoke in parables. He taught by example. He lived a perfect life.
Though the King of kings and Lord of lords had come, He was accorded by some the greeting given to an enemy, a traitor. There followed a mockery which some called a trial. Cries of “crucify him, crucify him” filled the air. Then commenced the climb to Calvary’s hill.
He was ridiculed, reviled, mocked, jeered, and nailed to a cross amidst shouts of “Let Christ the King of Israel descend now from the cross, that we may see and believe. He saved others; himself he cannot save.”
His response: “Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. Into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost.” His body was placed by loving hands in a sepulchre hewn of stone.
On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James, along with others, came to the sepulchre. To their astonishment, the body of their Lord was gone. Luke records that two men in shining garments stood by them and said: “Why seek ye the living among the dead? He is not here, but is risen.”
Next week the Christian world will celebrate the most significant event in recorded history. The simple pronouncement, “He is not here, but is risen,” was the first confirmation of the literal Resurrection of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. The empty tomb that first Easter morning brought comforting assurance, an affirmative answer to Job’s question, “If a man die, shall he live again?”
To all who have lost loved ones, we would turn Job’s question to an answer: If a man die, he shall live again. We know, for we have the light of revealed truth. “I am the resurrection, and the life,” spoke the Master. “He that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die.”
Through tears and trials, through fears and sorrows, through the heartache and loneliness of losing loved ones, there is assurance that life is everlasting. Our Lord and Savior is the living witness that such is so.
With all my heart and the fervency of my soul, I lift up my voice in testimony as a special witness and declare that God does live. Jesus is His Son, the Only Begotten of the Father in the flesh. He is our Redeemer; He is our Mediator with the Father. He it was who died on the cross to atone for our sins. He became the firstfruits of the Resurrection. Because He died, all shall live again. “Oh, sweet the joy this sentence gives: ‘I know that my Redeemer lives!’ ” May the whole world know it and live by that knowledge, I humbly pray, in the name of Jesus Christ, the Lord and Savior, amen.

Country Music Marathon
My husband's been super swamped with work and Boy Scouts and of course this marathon training he's been torturing himself with. I'm in awe of how much time and commitment a marathon takes by the way, so to all of you tough cookies out there who have finished one or more, you're amazing! Witnessing the aftermath of a 19 mile "practice run" has been a real eye opener for me and has strengthened my resolve to avoid any kind of activity that includes ice baths or eating "Goo". Not only do I not have the endurance to run more than a couple of miles (one), I don't have the attention span. So I will sit here with my muffin top for another month or so until gardening season is in full swing and then get back to work doing something physical I actually enjoy. Win win.Tuesday, March 16, 2010
