Easy and Practical

When we bought our home, we were super excited to have all the space and light. What we didn't think about was how much time it would take to furnish it. Being painfully indecisive and cheap doesn't help either and this is why there are still paper blinds taped to my bedroom windows. The thing is, I'm extremely particular about pretty much everything in life, including decorating, and that's OK. I'm here, in the house, A LOT.

Here's a project that I'm going to try. It's inexpensive and not super difficult, I think.

CUSTOMIZED ROLLER SHADES

1. First, measure your window. If you want your blinds to be inside the casing, carefully measure the top of the inside of your window casing. If you're going to install the blind outside, just measure the width you need for good coverage. Then measure the length adding 4-5 inches for the bottom.

2. Go to your local hardware store and buy a super cheap shade in the size you need.

3. Carefully remove the shade from the hardware and slide out the rod that keeps the bottom stiff and straight.

4. Using a heavy grade fabric that's ironed (denim, twill, upholstery grade cotton, etc) cut out pieces using your window measurements as the guide.

5. Turn your fabric over, and paint clear matte fabric glue along the edges. This will keep it from fraying.

6. Fold the bottom of your fabric to make a pocket for the shade's rod (1-2 inches typically)that you pulled out in step three. Fold the fabric again, and iron it flat. Sew across the top to keep it in place and slide the rod in.

7. Carefully attach the top of your fabric to the original hardware, using glue, double stick tape or you can even staple it. Just make sure you line your fabric up to where the original blind was and completely straight, or it won't roll up properly.

8. Install and enjoy!

ps. If this doesn't work, go here: http://www.theshadestore.com/ and put yourself out of your misery. That's where the above pictures are from. They're a great company and are having a sale right now!

Seriously, You are doing this yourself? It actually does sound easy enough and it would be a perfect way to customize using fabrics you love... but there is no doubt that I would mess it up.

I'd go right to the buying. James and I are decisive, impulse buyers. Luckily, our lack of taste keeps us on budget.

Can I say that we are long lost sisters.

"My professional life has been centered on the home, the well being of the family and everything that these subjects encompass. When I began working in this area more than 25 years ago, the subject of homemaking as it relates to families was largely overlooked, though the interest was clearly broad and the desire for information strong. My colleagues and I soon discovered we were satisfying a deeply felt unmet need."
