So this has been a couple of the most hectic, inefficient weeks of my life. I won't bore you with details, but having 3 out of 4 of my kids starting new schools has been a logistical nightmare. Now that things have slowed down, I can look back with a little perspective and laugh about a few moments that were less than stellar. For example...
On Wed, I was rushing with all 4 kids to get last minute errands in before Thursday, aka the first day of school. After a couple of hours of mundane shopping, my children decided to entertain themselves in the grocery by cracking wise and teasing me mercilessly. By the time we got to the checkout aisle, my face hurt from the fake smile I'd been sporting all day, you know, trying to be patient, and I was pretty much DONE. It was all I could do to focus on my running debit card when I heard a loud
"tap, tap, tap, t- tap, t- tap tap...etc"
on my right. As the mother of a drummer, I've become somewhat desensitized to constant beats and tapping from Oliver (in this case, it was coming from Spencer's direction), but at that moment it was all I could do not to jab the pencil in my ear and straight into my brain. So, without looking up I said, "Spencer, will you PLEASE STOP THAT TAPPING, I can't even hear myself think!" The loud tapping stopped immediately, so I finished the transaction, thanked the cashier, gave the bagger a smile, and was on my way.
When we got outside, the kids were unusually quiet until Spencer said, "Mom?"
I said, "Yes?"
He said, "Um, that wasn't me tapping.... it was the bagger."
I stopped dead in my tracks and busted out laughing.
I asked, "Why didn't you tell me?"
He said, "Because I was embarrassed so I just looked away."
