Stormy Weather
We made it through the night!!! I can't believe the damage and devistation that took only a couple of hours to cover 3 states! The storm was moving so fast that we could hardly keep up with the warnings on tv, but all's well here for us! Tuesday, February 5, 2008
Tracker?
Reading other people's blogs is extremely entertaining. I love getting ideas from my friends' older posts for my own and on the days that I have a sick child at home, it's my personal library. I guess I'm an addict, but now Oliver, Scott and Candice like it too. My Dad even set up his own blog, but it's about boring political stuff, so I didn't bother posting a link. Candice resisted for a while, but finally gave in. Scott likes the stories, but refuses to set up an account, so he uses my account. He also refuses to comment. Maybe he doesn't like it.
New First Presidency

SALT LAKE CITY 4 February 2008 Thomas S. Monson is the new president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, it was announced today at a news conference in the Church Office Building. President Monson, 80, succeeds President Gordon B. Hinckley, who died 27 January 2008.
The new world leader of the Church has called to serve with him in the First Presidency, the top governing body of the 13-million-member faith, President Henry B. Eyring, 74, first counselor, and President Dieter F. Uchtdorf, 67, second counselor.
Wow, this is so cool. I love Pres Uchtdorf! I just did a lesson based on his talk at General Conference. I wonder how they're going to revise the "Latter-Day Prophet" song again? It's getting really long! A second verse perhaps?
Raise the Roof

What a great country we live in! There are so many things we Americans enjoy and take for granted that are truly blessings in our lives. We had a talk in church a few weeks ago about this very thing. This speaker had statistics that broke down income levels worldwide and again reminded me to not only appreciate our standard of living but to also remember the responsibility that goes along with that! We all need reminders sometimes, right?
It's difficult to predict the changes that will occur over the next few years with whatevever candidate wins the presidential election. We've really got a mixed bag, Republican or Democrat, but you know, I honestly feel like I'm having to choose the lesser of the evils! There's only one candidate that, from the beginning, has remained constant and doesn't seem to give into the pressures of the political machine and that's my quirky man Ron Paul. It's too bad he's probably not going to get a nomination even though he's run a fantastic grass roots campaign!! I think you have to have tons of money, a niche (gender, race, religion, looks, history) to get the attention of our media/population. Good or bad, any press will win you some votes simply by getting your name out there!
I really believe that our civil liberties are at stake and it seems like a lot of people have forgotten what our country was founded on. The Constitution has pretty much been thrown out the window and it's truly a shame.
I am not a Democrat, and will vote for whatever Republican that runs simply to keep the likes of Hillary or Obama OUT!!! Having said that, McCain is 3rd on my list of least favorites even if he is a veteran. Contrary to popular belief, having served in the military doesn't mean you're a lifelong patriot or saint... even POW's.
There's been a lot of attention given to Romney and I think it's great for our church. President Hinkley encouraged us to raise our voices and what better way than having a member run for president! He even said to Romney, "It'll be a great experience if you win, and a great experience if you lose." Funny.
While I don't get the weird feeling from Romney, I simply don't support his foreign policy and I question his voting record.
Whatever happens, I hope it at least jump starts our economy and ends this war. "Perpetual War for Perpetual Peace"... I love that quote because it's so ridiculous. I just read that we are at a record high deficit. That's not good! But- it makes me even more determined to get our food storage in order and follow our prophet's guidance by being prepared in every way. You never know what will happen, but again, what a blessing it is to be free to influence change and share our opinions without punishment.
Although I was a little scared after my Oprah (dry heave) post. You guys got my back right?
A Ron Paul Presidency will...
-return the United States to Constitutional Law
-eliminate IRS & Income Tax
-end the war in Iraq
-protect and control our national borders
-stop the national ID card
-end the `Patriot Act
-return to a gold backed dollar
-reduce size of our Federal Government
-eliminate control of our lives and privacy
-keep the internet free
Here's proof!.............Congressman Dr. Ron Paul voted AGAINST the Iraq War; AGAINST the National ID Act; AGAINST regulating the internet; He never voted for an unbalanced budget; he never voted to raise Congressional pay, and he never voted for an unconstitutional bill. The success and enthusiasm for Ron Paul for President comes directly from the people. It's time to take our country back today.

The Tree Lady

Who is the Tree Lady? Well, if you ever get the opportunity to visit the great city of Nashville, go to the Opryland Hotel, and check her out! She's dressed like a tall tree, on leg and arm stilts, with leaves covering her entire body. She's scary as crap to children/ adults and we couldn't get enough. These photos don't do her justice! You'll have to see it for yourself.
Give me a Break!

I don't love tv. There are a few shows that I try to catch: Martha, Barefoot Contessa, Lost, Project Runway, Everyday Italian, and Sex and the City- the edited version. (Sometimes "Little People, Big World" because of all their cool midget stuff). Now that I've listed them, that actually seems like a lot, but I only get to watch them once in a while + they're seasonal.
However... in the winter, it seems all of us housewives spend a lot more time at home and the tv is our friend, right? Unfortunately that also turns into a lot of tv/entertainment talk when we get together as well. For example...
...sitting at ballet. Grace has ballet once a week, for one hour. Everyone there is very chatty except for me, most of the time. I'm not a chatterbox unless there's something really worth talking about. I could care less about American Idol, Dancing with the Stars, Brittney Spears, organic food etc.. except this last week. I actually had to bite my tongue because the conversation took a deadly turn.
OPRAH! Just the name makes me dry heave. Am I the only 30 something stay-at-home mom who doesn't appreciate the self congratulatory vomit she spews? I want to say I can't stand her show, but it's not just her show... it's her. She's shamefully indulgent. I think this is my number one complaint. Anyway, from what I could gather at ballet, her favorite cupcake is made here in Nashville and she sends for these things quite often. They go for something like 50 dollars for 6 of them. I'm sure this overpriced bakery's cupcake sales surged after her program aired because of all of these truly desperate housewives who sent for them, sporting pashminas, very unflattering hairdoes and who, coincidentally are now Barack Obama supporters. Give me a Break!!! She now takes over my least favorite tv show on my least favorite list, just because it was so in my face this week. Sorry Rachel Ray, you're now number 2.
Did I join the conversation? Hardly. I think I may have mentioned when shown the actual cupcake in the Oprah magazine (dry heave) that I didn't think they looked that great. I'm sure Martha has a much better recipe that takes about 1 hour and five dollars worth of ingredients. I didn't say that part out loud though.
Amy Sedaris has some great pointers for overcoming boring/irritating conversation.
"If you see someone boring someone else, just be grateful it's not you. If you see someone hogging the conversation, create an opening and try to include someone else... My line is, 'Yes, paella is very traditional to the Spaniards!' or 'Wasn't that British territory?' and if you see a shy person, ask them some questions like, 'Why are you shy? Tell everyone, we're all listening.'."
She also recommends having a cheeseball on hand. I guess boring/irritating conversation doesn't happen if everyone has a mouthful of cheese. Maybe I'll send one to Oprah.

LOST

The Terrible 3's

I was exhausted and needed a nap, she was exhausted but apparently didn't need a nap. So I decided to put her in the bath and get a little cleaning done. I thought I'd be a nice mommy and sing to her to lift her spirits while getting the bathroom organized and all. You know, a picture perfect Mormon mom, singing a lovely rendition of the Sunbeam song. At the end of my song, we both smiled at each other and she says to me with a straight face, "Please go away".
So after a snack, a bath and some warm milk, I try to coax her into laying down by laying down with her, hoping I would get my long awaited nap and she would wake up in a better mood. No dice. At this point I'm getting somewhat desperate so I tell her a story by memory, because I can hardly keep my eyes open to read. I must have fallen asleep like 10 times during the story because she kept poking me and saying, "That's not the end, Mommy because it doesn't make sense."
Trying to be patient I say to her, "Listen, if you don't want to take a nap, go upstairs while Mommy lays down."
She goes upstairs alright, but immediately comes back down with the loudest jingle bell I've ever heard, tied to a string. I realize at this point I'm not going to get any rest. I do insist, however, she take the jingle bell on a string upstairs while I try to get some things done. She refuses and starts swinging it around and around as fast as she can. When I turn to tell her she's going to time out, the bell hits me hard, square in the cheekbone... you know, the really bony part that has no fatty protection. I immediately snatch it away and say in a not so nice voice, "Go Upstairs!"
She of course, starts to cry and goes upstairs.
If you're all judging me at this point, I understand. If you're judging her, I understand as well. Not our finest moment. About two seconds later, Oliver comes home from school and says, "Mom, you look bad. Are you sick or something?" What happened to your face?
Yes, I'm sick or something.
So I get Oliver on task with his homework and he asks me where Sophia is. It's been about 5 minutes since the cheekbone incident and I realize it's mighty quiet up there. So once I get Oliver settled, I run up to check on her and there she is, all tucked into her bed, fast asleep, looking so peaceful and happy.
I'd like to say I felt humbled and appreciative of my little one, so beautiful and quiet- but I didn't. I threw my hands in the air and silently screamed, "NOOOOOO!" Too late for me.
Thanks for listening.

So Good!
His message to women in his patriarchal faith:
"Do the best you can. And remember that the greatest asset you have in this world is those children who you've brought into the world, and for whose nurture and care you're responsible." —News conference in Salt Lake City, March 13, 1995
"People wonder what we do for our women. I'll tell you what we do. We get out of their way and look with wonder at what they're accomplishing." —National Press Club appearance, March 8, 2000
On Church involvement in political issues:
"We urge our people to exercise their franchise as citizens of this nation, but we do not tell them how to vote and we do not tell the government how it should be run." —On CBS News' 60 Minutes, April 7, 1996
"The church as an institution does not involve itself in politics, nor does it permit the use of its buildings or facilities for political purposes. Now, we do become involved if there is a moral issue or something that comes to the legislative calendar which directly affects the church." —National Press Club appearance, March 8 2000
On the insistence of some evangelicals that Mormons are not Christians:
"I can't understand it. The very name of the savior is in the name of the church. The New Testament is a fundamental scripture for us. I can't understand why they take that position." —National Press Club appearance, March 8, 2000
On the lingering practice by "Mormon fundamentalists" of polygamy:
"People mistakenly assume that this church has something to do with it. It has nothing whatever to do with it. It has had nothing to do with it for a very long time. It's outside the realm of our responsibility. These people are not members. Any man or woman who becomes involved in it is excommunicated from the church." —On CNN's Larry King Live, September 8, 1998
President Gordon B. Hinckley, our Prophet

hold back the tears. He'll truly be missed!"Be Positive, Be Still, Be Involved, Be Grateful, Be Smart, Be Clean, Be True, Be Humble, Be Prayerful" -President Hinckley's Be's

What is wrong with me?

It started off ok, but by the time I got everyone + myself ready for church, I was in no mood. Why do children lose all sense of what's going on every Sunday morning? Suddenly brushing teeth and getting dressed are new concepts. Then, trying to find something to wear (yes I understand I should prep the night before) is a task I dread every week. Did I prep for RS? NO, I did not. Reading the lesson would help, right? Well, I didn't have time! I pieced two quilts this week to show for our new Enrichment group, did my Visiting Teaching, took care of one sick child and oh- managed everything else in my house with my husband gone for 3 days again. Did I mention the 13 year old alien that's taken over my sweet little Oliver's body. Yah, he doesn't like me much and thinks I'm a complete idiot. He thinks Scott is too so that makes me feel better.
Then Sacrament meeting was a complete loss because Sophia was in a bad mood and Grace was getting sick. I have no idea what the talks were about. Enos? I almost dropped the sacrament dish because I was wrestling with Sophia at the same time. Talk about awkward.
Our stake president said today that service is what saves, but he wasn't including church service. Are you kidding? While I agree that we should go beyond the obligitory task of magnifying our callings, I do think in order to gain a testimony of any principle, you have start off with "checking a box". A lot of times, that's all I can do.
In the end Heavenly Father has a way of reminding us that he's there. Our closing song in RS was "How Gentle God's Commands". I remember when we were in the process of selling our house and I, of course, was stressed to the max. Scott was gone Mon-Fri and I was left with the task of keeping the house immaculate just in case there was a potential buyer. It doesn't sound like a lot, but at the time it was all consuming. I would pray and pray, not only that our house would sell, but for Him to sustain me through a most stressful and emotional time. It seems amost every week at church I would get an answer through one or more hymns.... not that my house would sell but just a reminder to think eternally.
"Why should this anxious load Press down your weary mind, Haste to your Heavn'ly Father's throne and sweet refreshment find."
While I still think there's something wrong with me, I feel better now.... I love blogging.

1. I love yard work. I pretend I don't and act like a martyr when I'm working, but I really do. Planting and trimming and cutting, what a rush! It's so much better than working out and gives me what I love the most, complete control. Well, me and Mother Nature of course. I don't mow or water the law anymore though.
2. Other people's kids get on my nerves. There are only a few select children who I enjoy being around and the rest irritate the crap out me. I was a Primary President too.... so sad. There was one child, whose name I won't mention, that was absolutely horrible. She told me once in a really mean voice, "I don't like you!" I told her I didn't like her either, but she needed to get in line or I was taking her to her mom. She was shocked, but quickly got in line.
3. I have an amazing sense of smell. I can smell things that no one else can. This is more a curse than a blessing, let me tell you! I remember pushing a woman so hard in Kohls to get away from an offensive smell that almost made me throw up. The store was crowded and I couldn't move in any direction.
4. I hide from "pop overs". One of my biggest pet peeves are unannounced visitors. If I don't know you're coming, I'm most likely not going to answer the door. Only good friends get to see my disorganized house and smell my morning breath. Lucky them.
5. I am the best pancake maker ever. I don't know what it is, but my pancakes are tremendous. Come try them sometime, really... just call first.
6. My strange vast knowledge of vintage cinema. When I first came back to the US as a teenager, I was obsessed with AMC. At the time, they still played the really old movies from the 30's, 40's and 50's. My favorites included Alexander's Ragtime Band, Ginger Rogers and Gracie Allen. My family made so much fun of me during that weird time, but now I can throw down with old people like nobody's business!
I tag Candice, Kristen, Heather, Robin, Alice, and Martha.
FLOR

So, we've been in this house now for 6 months and it still looks empty and cold. I'm not unrealistic- I understand it takes time, but my indecision renders me helpless and confused. But, FLOR, a carpet tile company, has opened up a whole new world!!! They're 20"x20" carpet tiles you can clean in the sink and some are recycled so environmentally friendly as well. If you have small children, a limited budget and/or irregularly sized rooms, this is the company for you! We ordered an entryway rug and eat-in kitchen rug already. We're going to order more.
Also, Martha Stewart just came out with a line of tiles through this company and her tiles are the most beautiful!!!!

As Promised
TIP: Just find your name because the rest will bore the crap out of you. It's pretty shameless and long.
Erika- She's first because she was the one who introduced me to the world of blogging and has hung in there. -I've known Erika since the 9th grade and have always looked up to her and admired her for so many things, but mostly because she's really good at sports- me, not so much. Her self deprecating humor is right up my alley and puts people at ease. I remember hating her at church dances because more boys asked her to dance than me, but I've let that go now. We saw each other a few years ago at my house in Kentucky when she was moving out east and I swear, after 3 kids, she looked the same. Maybe I do still hate her. Oh, she's also beautiful and a great mom.
Heather- aka, Erika's sister- So funny, what else can I say? She and my sister were most appropriately good friends in middle school and maybe the most inappropriate girls ever. I can't remember what exactly the two of them did, but I'm sure it was ridiculous. Heather is one of the most talented photographers I've ever seen. If you click on her name she has her photography link on her blog. Please check it out!!!! She's also beautiful and a great mom.
Candice- What's not to like?! My sister is so funny and my best friend. Now that we live close to one another we get to hang out a lot more. We actually spent last Saturday together, kids and all at the Opryland hotel. I kept saying, this is the best day ever! Between the dancing fountains, the creepy tree lady, indoor gondola ride, the most shockingly expensive salmon you've ever tasted and 50 thousand bathroom breaks, it was a blast. My sister scores a 10 on the funny scale (My dad told me I scored a 6). She's also beautiful and a great mom.
Kristen- I met her in Kentucky and liked her from day one. She, Julie and I were best friends and stuck together because we didn't have any family and all felt a little out of place there. Her husband Paul is a great guy and helped us out tremendously with our house remodel and moving. Kristen was and is always there to listen to me complain without judgement and on top of that, made me the cutest scarf as a going away present! Oh, she also beautiful and a great mom.
Julie- Another friend from Kentucky. This girl does it all!!! Three kids, full time student, an editors assistant, in the Stake Primary Presidency, substitute pianist, and 100% visiting teaching. I'm sure I'm leaving stuff out, but that about sums it up. She has listened patiently to my whining and I can't tell you how many times she watched my kids. A great example/friend with an unbelievable testimony and so much compassion for others. She's also beautiful and a great mom.
Alice- Yes, she's my friend. -I realize I've never met her, but she's so hilarious and has commented more than most of my so-called friends that I see all the time. So, Alice is not only funny but a great writer. I love her blog because it's not the typical "Mormon Mom" blog. In the last little while she's tackled subjects from 'Ugly Kids' to 'Working at Target', from 'Mitt Romney' to 'Enlarged Prostates' with equal amounts of honesty and humor and a very limited amount of family pictures. She's beautiful and a great mom too.
My Inlaws, Betty and Mike- They get a free pass because they don't know how to post comments, but email and call on a regular basis with encouragement and nice words. They're very supportive whenever we try new things and aren't embarrassed of me yet.? Thanks! They're also beautiful and really great parents.
That's about it. Some my other "friends" and family send emails with comments and I really do appreciate it, but it's not making my blog very interesting! The rest have simply said, "nah, I don't really want to". I don't think my circle of friends are into this blogging business yet, but I'm going to keep on keepin' on!

New Friends
funny mom- I found her blog through Erika's, and loved it. Very funny lady!
baker who cooks- She is a consummate foodie and has a beautiful blog full of recipes and great links.
Bourdain- host of "No Reservations" Great show and great sense of humor. He travels around the world and samples the best of every country's food and culture. Not the cheesy touristy crap!
Sue- She specializes in Korean food/Korean fusion. Love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I left messages for each telling them I was adding them to my favorites. Hope they don't mind.

Gracie's NativityResolutions 2008

But this is a new year, and I should improve myself and try to do better in every way. So, here are my resolutions. I figure writing them down for all the world (or my 3 readers) to see will put me on the spot and in turn, motivate me to actually follow through.
1. Lose weight! (Notice I didn't write, "Get Back in Shape" because that would be a lie. First of all, I don't care about health. C'mon, it's not about health, it's about fitting into my clothes for the first time in a year without looking like a sausage. Second of all "Back" would insinuate I had ever really been "in Shape" to begin with.) My blog is all about honesty.
2. Get my house in order! (We've been here six months and my house still feels empty and cold. I need to get off my butt and finish all the little and big projects that plague my dreams. Painting, sewing, etc... This would also help with goal number one.)
3. Learn Korean! (Once I feel satisfied with goal number two, I want to get Rosetta Stone. Then I can pass myself off as a real Korean and not feel ashamed about my butchering of the language. In the local paper, two Korean business women were showcased and I want to be their friends. I'm totally heading over there with rice cakes in hand. Learning Korean will finally make me legit!!! Yessssss.)
I'd love to know what your resolutions are. Please leave a comment or two... or three, ok four. My friends and family say they read my blog, but without a comment they have no proof. Plus, if you leave a comment, I'll say nice things about you in my next few posts. The more comments, the more compliments. Sounds good, right?
